5-7 Edgar Quinet Street, Sector 1, Bucharest, 010017
S7-13 Pitar Moş Street, Sector 1, Bucharest, 010451Foreign Languages and Literatures, one of the largest and most important faculties of the University of Bucharest, has a rich tradition in teaching modern and classical languages and literatures.
Latin was taught right from the foundation of the University of Bucharest in 1864, followed by French in 1877. In 1874 Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu starts his lectures on Indo-European comparative philology and the University enters the circuit of great and indisputable European values.
From then on new philological specialties were gradually introduced at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Bucharest: Slavic languages (1891), German (1905), Italian (1909), Spanish (1930), Russian (1934), English (1936), Chinese (1956), Arabic and Turkish (1957), Hungarian (1958), Hindi (1965), Persian and Finnish (1969), Portuguese and Japanese (1974), Catalan (1978), Hebrew (1990), Romani (1992), Swedish and Dutch (1993), Korean and Slovenian (1995), Jewish Studies (2000), Applied Modern Languages (2000), Modern Greek (2001) and American Studies (2004).
The last half-century to this day has seen the greatest development in the teaching and learning of foreign languages at the University of Bucharest, which have become a major point of interest within the institution and an essential condition for young people to assert themselves.
An inventory of all the languages that have been taught over the years at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures reaches the impressive number of 42 languages. Today more than 35 languages are still taught, of which Modern Greek, Turkish, Swedish, Catalan, Bulgarian, Croatian, Slovenian, Romanian, Armenian and Macedonian are not present in the study portfolios at other universities in the country.

The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures trains specialists in philological fields involving the study of a combination of a foreign language and literature A and a foreign language and literature B/ Romanian B/ Latin B or Classical Philology (Latin Language and Literature – Ancient Greek Language and Literature). Students may also enrol on programmes in the field of Applied Modern Languages, such as Translation and Interpreting or Applied Modern Languages.
Students can take courses in both Philology and Applied Modern Languages
Over the years, the faculty has earned a solid reputation both at home and abroad, as proven by collaborations with prestigious universities abroad such as Antwerp, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Bordeaux, Padua, Venice, Udine, Moscow, Madrid, Zaragoza, Ghent, Antwerp, Krakow, Warsaw, Lisbon, Evora, Birmingham, Liverpool Hope, Ljubljana, Belgrade, Duke, etc., with which ERASMUS, SOCRATES, CEEPUS and LEONARDO programmes and agreements are being carried out, as well as the permanent collaboration, for over two decades, with numerous foreign lecturers through cultural agreements.
Both students and faculty staff benefit equally from ERASMUS+ partnerships. The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures is also involved in many of the initiatives implemented within the CIVIS university alliance, of which the Univesity of Bucharest is a proud member (blended learning programmes, summer schools, various inter-university cooperation programmes).
The Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures enrols students for 4 undergraduate programmes – Philology, Cultural Studies, Translation and Interpretation and Applied Modern Languages), 17 master programmes in the fields of Philology and Cultural Studies, 2 master programmes in the field of Educational Sciences (German and French) organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences and 2 doctoral schools.
